While the Midwest has become more pro-life than, perhaps, any other region of the United States, lawmakers in Illinois bucked the trend by enacting the most liberal abortion legislation in the country.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Steve Karlen and Matt Britton talk with former prosecutor Kaitlin Hargate about shocking developments in the "Land of Lincoln," including:

  • How sneaky Illinois politicians rammed through an abortion bill that had previously failed to gain support
  • Why the new law is even more pro-abortion than New York's legalization of third-trimester abortions
  • Why Illinois legislators making the state an abortion haven will be disparaged by the history books
  • The sobbing father who helplessly pleaded for the life of his unborn baby in front of an Illinois abortion facility--and the rights of fathers to protect their abortion-vulnerable children

As America celebrates its independence this 4th of July, the greatest threat to the country's future isn't an external enemy. It's abortion.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, we look at the top five reasons support for abortion is unpatriotic:

  1. Abortion is an attack on the first right America was founded upon: the unalienable Rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
  2. Abortion destroys America’s future by inducing demographic winter.
  3. Abortion betrays the legacy of America’s feminist pioneers who were pro-life.
  4. Americans have a long history of stepping up to protect innocent life both at home and abroad.
  5. Abortion is one more example of the Supreme Court dehumanizing people by denying them equal rights under the law.

States across America are passing pro-life laws...and out-of-touch corporate executives are losing their minds.

While multinational media conglomerates threaten to pull business out of pro-life states, 180 CEOs issued a letter claiming that women need abortion to be equal.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Matt Britton, and Steve Karlen talk about corporate America's attack on pregnant mothers. We discuss:

  • Why does big business think women are inferior to men--unless they are stripped of their ability to bear life?
  • Are these corporate executives tacitly admitting they discriminate against working mothers?
  • Which social media giants are discriminating against pro-lifers?

We cover that--and much more--on this episode!

Over the last decade, the abortion industry has subtly changed the way it attempts to justify legal abortion. On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen discuss:

  • why the abortion industry's rhetoric has changed
  • why these changes are a clear sign that the pro-life movement is winning
  • how pro-lifers can prepare for the future of the abortion debate

What are the abortion industry's preferred talking points in 2019?

  1. Women's right to bodily autonomy trumps the right to life of the unborn child.
  2. If you don't have a uterus, you don't get to have an opinion.
  3. Pro-lifers hate women.
  4. Pro-lifers are in favor of "forced birth."
  5. Women who miscarry will be put in jail.
  6. Women need abortion to achieve equality.
  7. Opposing abortion following a sexual assault makes you "pro-rape."

We'll discuss and debunk these talking points. Listen in!

  3. Your prayers might bring a worker out of the abortion industry
  4. Pro-life momentum is stronger than ever
  5. You'll grow closer with God
  6. You will make new friends
  7. Abortion advocates are getting louder and more aggressive

  10. You might save a life

Abortion is the world's leading cause of death, and the success of population control advocates is causing a global depopulation crisis.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney and Matt Britton discuss the state of both the abortion industry and the pro-life movement around the globe with Human Life International President Fr. Shenan Boquet. Fr. Boquet shares how positive pro-life developments in the United States are saving lives worldwide, the importance of pastors teaching the Gospel of Life, and what he does with the hate mail he gets after preaching on the beauty of human life.

States across the country have introduced laws dramatically restricting or even banning abortion.

Led by actress Alyssa Milano, C-list Hollywood celebrities are losing their minds, calling for an economic boycott of Georgia and a "sex strike." Milano's demand for "bodily autonomy"--even at the cost of innocent human life--illustrates the harm of valuing self over service to others.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Steve Karlen, and Matt Britton discuss Hollywood's anger, what it says about the pro-abortion movement, and why following the Mother of Jesus' example ("Let it be done to me according to Thy Will") would make for a better and healthier society...

...though we do endorse Ms. Milano's sex strike--at least outside of marriage.

Recently, Pennsylvania State Rep. Brian Sims became a national embarrassment when he broadcast a video of himself berating an elderly 40 Days for Life participant as she prayed silently in front of Planned Parenthood. The verbal tirade made national headlines and led to calls for Rep. Sims to resign--all while thousands of pro-lifers responded with a prayer rally at the same Planned Parenthood.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Steve Karlen, and Matt Britton review the most pathetic moments of the Sims saga:

  • Rep. Sims attacked a prayer warrior for her race--while insisting that she is racist.
  • The verbal onslaught lacked imagination, to say the least. (Sims used the word "shame" or a variant 35 times!)
  • The attack makes the unfounded assumption that pro-lifers don't serve the poor and vulnerable after birth; they do!
  • Rep. Sims offered cash if his viewers would identify 40 Days for Life volunteers.
  • Rep. Sims, a man, attacked women for being at Planned Parenthood--the very critique he makes of pro-lifers.
  • His non-apology apology video was an epic failure!
  • After repeatedly accusing a 40 Days for Life volunteer of hiding (which she didn't), Rep. Sims then set his Twitter page to private and refused to meet with constituents!

Canada is not an easy place to be a pro-lifer--or for an unborn child.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Steve Karlen and Matt Britton discuss their trip north for the Canadian National March for Life. They'll also assess pro-life challenges and opportunities in Canada--including why the rest of the pro-life world would do well to keep an eye on the country.

Campaign Life Coalition Vice President Matthew Wojciechowski, who helps organize the March for Life, sat down with Steve for a live interview from the event.

The abortion industry circulates a lot of misinformation designed to maintain legal abortion. To successfully defend pre-born children, pro-lifers need to know--and articulate--the truth about why abortion must end.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Robert Colquhoun, and Steve Karlen discuss the top five things EVERY pro-lifer MUST know about abortion:

  1. Science proves beyond a doubt that the embryo/fetus is a unique human life.
  2. Abortion is not just a decision between a woman and her doctor.
  3. Planned Parenthood is money-hungry abortion empire.
  4. There’s no case so desperate that killing a human being is justified.
  5. Abortion harms women.
Apr 30, 2019

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen discuss the powerful--and fruitful--conversion of former abortionist, Dr. Anthony Levatino, who also plays the abortionist in the Unplanned film.

Happy Easter! The dust is beginning to settle following the largest and busiest Lenten 40 Days for Life campaign in history!

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen look back at some of the most powerful--and the funniest--stories from local 40 Days for Life campaigns this Lent. Listen in and learn about:

  • How the woman who introduced abortion to Mississippi joined the 40 Days for Life vigil in front of the state's last remaining abortion facility
  • The family who brought a newborn baby saved from abortion to the vigil to thank volunteers for their sacrifices
  • The nonagenarians who faithfully pray and witness at their local vigil in Pennsylvania
  • How the workers at your local Planned Parenthood have a nickname for every dedicated vigil participant
  • The volunteer who said persecution from abortion supporters simply doesn't compare to the persecution she faced growing up Christian in...Saudi Arabia!
Apr 16, 2019

The largest-ever Lenten 40 Days for Life campaign is complete. We know of hundreds of babies are alive and well today because of YOUR prayers, fasting, and peaceful vigil.

Now the Christian world enters Holy Week--the week that changed the world. On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Robert Colquhoun, and Steve Karlen discuss the fruits of the campaign, the special significance Holy Week has for pro-lifers, the Good Friday miracle in Milwaukee, and where we go from here.

For months, the pro-life world has been preparing for the release of the Unplanned film.

Now we are beginning to see the fruits of the film. Not only do we have reports of hearts and minds changed coming in from coast to coast, but we also have reports of babies saved from abortion--because of the film!

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen discuss the film's surprisingly strong performance and stories of the impact it's making.

Is abortion just another justice issue? And what does it mean to be pro-life? Can you consider yourself pro-life if your efforts to end abortion aren't linked with activism on climate change, immigration, poverty, and a host of other social concerns?

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Steve Karlen, Robert Colquhoun, and Sue Thayer discuss seven reasons why the pro-life movement is RIGHT to focus on ending abortion:

  1. It's impossible to effectively engage all social issues at once. And, in fact, most pro-lifers are actively involved in serving the needy in their communities in other ways.

  2. Abortion is the world's leading cause of death, which makes it the most important human rights issue in history.

  3. No other social issues matter...unless you're allowed to be born.

  4. Abortion kills an innocent human being and is inherently evil. Most other issues don't involve an intrinsic evil. They simply involve debates and disagreements about the most effective solutions to particular social problems.

  5. Jesus said the poor will always be with us--not that the killing of children will always be with us. While ALL Christians have a duty to care for the poor, we can't wait for poverty to end before we end the killing of children.

  6. Preventing abortion does address a wide variety of social ills. After all, abortion is linked to poverty, substance abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, addiction, mental health problems, and more.

  7. You can do something about abortion where you live. With some social issues, we can only make an impact indirectly, often through politicians. Sometimes the temptation to serve "humanity" as an abstraction, distracts us from serving actual human beings. At a 40 Days for Life vigil, you can end abortion by serving abortion-vulnerable moms and babies one at a time in your community.

This is the week! The long-awaited Unplanned film is out this week.

On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen discuss the upcoming film, the "R" rating it received from the Motion Picture Association of America, and what this movement means for the landscape of the pro-life world.

Nobody wants to have an abortion. And nobody really denies that nobody wants to have an abortion.

A recent survey shares what many post-abortive women wanted and needed instead of an abortion. On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, we discuss how the support resources the women wanted already exist--and how pro-lifers can connect abortion-minded women with those resources before it's too late.

Mar 12, 2019

Last month, the United States Senate blocked a bill that would prohibit the killing of children who survive failed abortions.

You read that correctly. Abortion-on-demand all nine months of pregnancy isn't enough for the abortion industry, which is now clamoring for the right to kill children even after birth.

Standing in Planned Parenthood's way are abortion survivors like Melissa Ohden. On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney and Sue Thayer talk with Melissa about:

  • Why the abortion industry is so terrified of abortion survivors that it denies their very existence
  • The medical professionals who left Melissa alone to die after her birth--and the nurse who saved her life
  • Sue teaching high school sex ed to Melissa and her husband back when Sue worked at Planned Parenthood
  • Melissa lobbying the U.S. Senate and meeting with President Trump

One of the great Christian books of the 20th century is C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. Written from the vantage point of a demon trying to lure his "patient" away from the one true God, the book teaches us about our relationship with God by looking at the ways demons tempt human beings.

In the spirit of The Screwtape Letters, Shawn Carney, Robert Colquhoun, and Steve Karlen count down the top seven ways to ruin your 40 Days for Life campaign.

With gruesome late-term abortion legislation sweeping the country, the media has parroted the argument that third-trimester abortion is necessary to protect the health--or even the life--of a mother.

It's a compassionate-sounding claim. But is it true?

On this episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney and Steve Karlen talk to an expert. Dr. Monique Ruberu, OB-GYN, joins us to discuss:

  • whether abortion is ever needed to preserve a mother's health
  • the absurdity of aborting children facing terminal prenatal diagnoses
  • her experiences saving lives as the leader of the 40 Days for Life campaign in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • the lifesaving power of abortion pill reversal

Planned Parenthood's annual report is out.

During the 2016-17 fiscal year, abortions are up, taxpayer funding is up, total revenue is up, and other services provided decreased.

On this episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen discuss:

  • the congressional failure to defund Planned Parenthood and its role in Planned Parenthood performing MORE abortions in 2016-17
  • how the abortion giant has become more brazen in advertising its provision of abortion
  • what constitutes an "adoption referral" at Planned Parenthood
  • which legitimate health care services were reduced as the number of abortions performed went up

Former Planned Parenthood manager Sue Thayer also discusses how most hospitals won't even accept most referrals from Planned Parenthood!

Feb 12, 2019

On last week's episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast, we discussed New York's new law, which legalized abortion up to birth in the Empire State (while also allowing non-physicians to perform abortions and removing protections for children born alive after surviving abortions).

The very next week, legislators in Virginia presented a similar bill. Delegate Kathy Tran testified that her bill would allow abortion even as a mother is beginning to deliver her child.

And if that wasn't bad enough, disgraced Gov. Ralph Northam then conducted a radio interview where he suggested that under the proposed law, children who are born alive would be either killed or left to die depending on the mother's wishes. Killing a child at any point after conception is a crime against humanity. But the attempt to introduce post-birth infanticide marks a new low.

On this episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Steve Karlen, and Matt Britton--a four-time elected Virginia prosecutor--discuss:

  • how the proposed legislation would change Virginia law
  • whether Gov. Northam actually suggested killing children after birth
  • how Del. Tran canceled a public town hall meeting to avoid backlash to her abortion bill
  • the hypocrisy of Planned Parenthood condemning Gov. Northam's racist yearbook photos while simultaneously honoring its racist founder, Margaret Sanger, who actually spoke to the KKK

Topics We Cover On This Episode

On the 46th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Decision, the State of New York enacted a shocking bill that legalizes abortion in the Empire State--even late in the third trimester of pregnancy!

On this episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen discuss:

  • why New York's pro-abortion politicians decided NOW is the time to pass legislation so extreme that it rivals abortion law in places like China and North Korea
  • the dangers of the law's provision allowing NON-DOCTORS to perform abortions
  • how children born alive after attempted abortions are no longer protected under New York law

We'll also take a look at reaction to the new law--including Gov. Andrew Cuomo's directive to light the World Trade Center pink "to celebrate this achievement and shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow."

It's hard to find Hollywood productions that don't denigrate life, family, and Christianity. But Unplanned is the unique movie that speaks the truth about our most deeply held values--while also appealing to a mainstream audience.

Shawn Carney, Sue Thayer, and Steve Karlen have screened the film, which comes out this spring. They'll review Unplanned  on this episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast. They'll talk about what surprised them about the film. And Sue will discuss how Abby's experience in Unplanned compares with her experience directing a Planned Parenthood location for 17 years.

Seeking to make abortion mainstream, a new movement of activists encourages women to "shout your abortion."

The result is a desperate campaign that awkwardly attempts to justify abortion using vulgar t-shirts, aggressive social media posts, and...a children's book? It gets strange quickly!

On this episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney, Robert Colquhoun, and Steve Karlen take a look at the "Shout Your Abortion" movement, the pain that drives it, and the pro-life women who are speaking out about the pain abortion caused in their lives.
