China has been exposed for committing genocide on the Uyghur people in Xinjiang. It’s no surprise that the country responsible for the world’s worst genocide against the unborn is also committing genocide on other groups within the country.

How can a society suddenly engage in mass-scale killing—especially of the defenseless? It’s a question that’s difficult to fathom. But we can look to the history books to find the common threads and factors that make genocide possible:

  1. Dehumanizing language
  2. Scapegoating
  3. Government involvement
  4. Media support
  5. Use of technology to kill on an industrial scale
  6. Keeping the killing out of sight
  7. Punishment of dissent
